Time
Time is an
ongoing sequence of events. We use clock to see and measure the time.
Clock
A clock has
two hands, the shorter hand is called the hour hand and the longer hand
is called the minute hand. Some clocks also have a third hand called seconds
hand.
When the
short hand is at 3 and the long hand is at 12, the time is 3 o’clock.
Writing Time
The time can
be written in two ways. 5 o’clock can be written as 5:00. The two dots separate
hours and minutes. In the same way, 2 o’clock is written as 2:00 and 7 o’clock
is written as 7:00.
Half Past
We know that
1 hour = 60 minutes and half an hour = 30 minutes.
When minute
hand (the longer hand) is halfway around the clock at 6 and hour hand is in
between two numbers, then the time is half past the previous number.
Observe the
following clock. The minute hand is at 6 and the hour hand is in-between 7 and 8.
The time is half past 7 or 30 minutes after 7. This is also written as 7:30.
Quarter Past
One-quarter
of 60 minutes is equal to 15 minutes. In the given clock, the minute hand is at
3 and the hour hand is slightly next to 5. It shows the time quarter past 5. The
time can be written as 5:15.
Quarter To
In the given
clock, the minute hand is at 9 and the hour hand is slightly before 8. It shows
the time quarter to 8. The time can be written as 7:45.
Days of a Week
