Class 2 Addition Tutorial

Terms Used in Addition

There are 3 terms used in addition.

1. ‘+’ is the sign of addition.

2. The numbers that are added are called addends.

3. The result that we get is called sum or total.

Addition of 2-digit Numbers Without Regrouping

Example: Add 46 and 32.

Solution:

Step 1: Add the ones. 6 ones + 2 ones = 8 ones

Step 2: Add the tens. 4 tens + 3 tens = 7 tens

Hence, 46 + 32 = 78 (7 tens + 8 ones).

Addition of 2-digit Numbers with Regrouping

Example: Add 25 and 37.

Solution:

Step 1: Add the ones. 5 ones + 7 ones = 12 ones

Step 2: As 12 > 9, regroup the ones column as 12 ones = 1 ten + 2 ones.

Step 3: Carry 1 ten to the tens column and write 2 in the ones column as shown below.

Step 4: Add the tens. 2 + 3 + 1 (carry over) = 6 tens

 Thus, 25 + 37 = 62.

Addition of Three 2-digit Numbers with Regrouping

Example: Add 27, 51 and 16.

Solution:

Step 1: Add the ones. 7 + 1 + 6 = 14 ones = 1 ten + 4 ones

Step 2: Carry 1 ten to the tens column, and write 4 in the ones column.

Step 3: Add the tens. 2 + 5 + 1 + 1 (carry over) = 9 tens

 Thus, 27 + 51 + 16 = 94

Addition Facts

Order Property of Addition

The sum does not change even if the order of the addends is changed.

Thus, 3 + 2 = 2 + 3.

Zero Property of Addition

If any number is added to zero or zero is added to any number, the sum is the number itself.

Adding a 3-digit Number and a 2-digit Number Without Regrouping

Example: Add 341 and 56.

Solution:

Step 1: Add the ones. 1 one + 6 ones = 7 ones

Step 2: Add the tens. 4 tens + 5 tens = 9 tens

Step 3: Add the hundreds. 3 hundreds + 0 hundreds = 3 hundreds

Thus, 341 + 56 = 397.

Adding a 3-digit Number and a 2-digit Number with Regrouping

Example: Add 639 and 53.

Solution:

Step 1: Add the ones. 9 + 3 = 12 ones = 1 ten + 2 ones

Write 2 in the ones column and carry over 1 ten to the tens column.

Step 2: Add the tens. 3 + 5 + 1 (carry over) = 9 tens

Step 3: Add the hundreds. 6 + 0 = 6 hundreds

Thus, 639 + 53 = 692

Adding 3-digit Number with a 3-digit Number Without Regrouping

Example 1: Add 165 and 224.

Solution:

Step 1: Add the ones. 5 + 4 = 9 ones

Step 2: Add the tens. 6 + 2 = 8 tens

Step 3: Add the hundreds. 1 + 2 = 3 hundreds

Thus, 165 + 224 = 389

Adding 3-digit Number with a 3-digit Number with Regrouping

Example 1: Add 337 and 294.

Solution:

Step 1: Add the ones. 7 ones + 4 ones = 11 ones

Step 2: Regroup the ones. 11 ones = 1 ten 1 one

Write 1 one in ones column and 1 ten in tens column.

Step 3: Add the tens. 1 ten + 3 tens + 9 tens = 13 tens

Step 4: Regroup the tens. 13 tens = 1 hundred 3 tens

Write 3 tens in tens column and 1 hundred in hundreds column.

Step 5: Add the hundreds. 1 hundred + 3 hundreds + 2 hundreds = 6 hundreds

Thus, 337 + 294 = 631

Story Sums on Addition Class 2

Example 1: 276 people visited an exhibition on Saturday and 458 people visited on Sunday. How many people visited the exhibition on both the days?

Solution:

2 7 6      Number of visitors on Saturday

   +  4 5 8      Number of visitors on Sunday

  ------------

7 3 4      Total number of visitors on both the days.

  ------------

Example 2: Neha saw 159 birds on one tree and 367 birds on another tree. How many birds did Neha see on both the trees?

Solution:

1 5 9      Number of birds on first tree

+  3 6 7      Number of birds on second tree

  ------------

5 2 6      Total number of birds on both the trees.

  ------------
