The Hindu Number System

In this system, ten symbols namely, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are used. The Hindu Number System is a place value system. This is also called base-10 or decimal number system.

Digit 0 is used not only as place holder in the place value system, but also as a number, just as any other number. Aryabhata used the arithmetic properties of 0 in his work Aryabhatiya. The discovery of zero as a number and the place value system is truly a major advancement. It paved the way for rapid scientific developments.

In Hindu number system, each place is increased by 10 times from right to left.

The places in Hindu number system are as follows:

Ones (O), Tens (T), Hundreds (H), Thousands (TH), Ten Thousands (TTH), Lakhs (L), …

To write in 5-digit number in Hindu number system, we arrange the place value table as follows:

Thus, the number = 4 × 104 + 7 × 103 + 8 × 102 + 2 × 10 + 5 × 1

                                 = 40000 + 7000 + 800 + 10 + 5

                                 = 47825

Similarly, the number 30869 can be written as:

30869 = 3 × 104 + 0 × 103 + 8 × 102 + 6 × 10 + 9 × 1

 

Now, try to solve the following questions based on Hindu number system.

1. Write the number for the following landmark number positions.

a. 3 × 104 + 2 × 103 + 5 × 102 + 4 × 10 + 6 × 1

b. 2 × 103 + 9 × 102 + 7 × 10 + 2 × 1

c. 7 × 104 + 0 × 103 + 8 × 102 + 5 × 10 + 5 × 1

d. 5 × 104 + 6 × 103 + 6 × 102 + 1 × 10 + 4 × 1

2. Write the following numbers using places in Hindu system as expanded form.

a. 48732

b. 81072

c. 38745

d. 50237
