The Hindu Number System
In this
system, ten symbols namely, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are used. The Hindu
Number System is a place value system. This is also called base-10 or decimal
number system.
Digit 0
is used not only as place holder in the place value system, but also as a
number, just as any other number. Aryabhata used the arithmetic properties of 0
in his work Aryabhatiya. The discovery of zero as a number and the place
value system is truly a major advancement. It paved the way for rapid
scientific developments.
In
Hindu number system, each place is increased by 10 times from right to left.
